From Notebooks to Networks: ETC's Path Toward Next-Gen Data Workflows

Pharmaceutical R&D has outgrown first-gen electronic laboratory notebooks (ELNs), which improved compliance and searchability but required scientists to capture and re-enter data outside the system. The Enabling Technologies Consortium (ETC) is redefining how laboratory workflows, metadata, and analytics can integrate seamlessly within-or alongside-modern ELNs. Building on outcomes from the IQ Consortium’s wearable data capture initiative and a 2024 RFI, ETC evaluated lightweight, flexible platforms enabling secure cross-company collaboration.
A pilot implementation using Microsoft 365 and Power Platform connectors applied strict tenant isolation, B2B guest access, and outbound-only connectivity to balance usability and cybersecurity. Three integrated use cases (size-exclusion chromatography (SEC), stability studies, and technology transfer) demonstrated standardized ingestion of Excel/PDF data, harmonized metadata pipelines, and decision-ready visualizations. The stability study case illustrated full protocol-to-execution continuity, enabling scheduling, sample management, results capture, and analysis across internal and CRO data sources.
The consortium’s approach emphasizes modular, vendor-agnostic “building blocks,” early alignment on connectivity and security interfaces, and a dual-workspace model that combines shared learning environments with company-specific zones. This structure supports agile experimentation while maintaining data governance.
Collectively, these initiatives mark a shift from legacy documentation toward connected, FAIR-minded data ecosystems. By integrating structured capture, flexible metadata models, and secure collaboration, ETC demonstrates a scalable path to reproducible, AI-ready laboratory workflows that enhance efficiency, insight generation, and scientific reproducibility across the pharmaceutical R&D landscape.
