Information

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a modern analytical technique that can be used to determine the structure and composition of analyzed specimens at the molecular level. This technique is also minimally invasive and destructive. This and other advantages of SERS against traditional techniques used in forensics make it the ideal method for the identification of colorants on hair and fabric. In this poster, I will present research findings from my group on the use of SERS for detection and identification of dyes present on hair and fabric exposed to a large spectrum of environmental factors, including sun , water, heat and soils. I will demonstrate how these factors alter SERS-based identification of dyes. This information will help forensic experts across the country to utilize SERS for robust and reliable analysis of physical pieces of evidence.
