Solid phase extraction (SPE) can be one of the most challenging and time-consuming processes in the analysis of large volume water samples. Although SPE disks offer higher flow rates and better clogging resistance compared to SPE cartridges, the latter are more commonly used due to their lower costs, compatibility with automated systems, and lower solvent consumption.
In this presentation, we introduce a novel “Mini-disk” mechanism that integrates the benefits while addressing the limitations of cartridges and disks. This hybrid design achieves significantly increased flow rates and improved tolerance to particulate matter while consuming a similar volume of solvent as cartridge-based extraction. Furthermore, the Mini-disk has a diameter of only 32mm and is designed to fit standard luer slip connections, making it compatible with both cartridge-based automated SPE systems and vacuum manifolds.
This innovative disk format offers significant improvements in efficiency and particulate tolerance compared to conventional cartridge-based extractions. We will discuss the key design considerations and present the results demonstrating its effectiveness for pesticides, PAHs, TCLP semi-volatiles and other compounds.
