Information
There are many choices available to the gas chromatographer on how to configure the instrument to meet the requirements of the application and business model such as sample introduction accessories, autosamplers, injectors, columns, and detectors.
There is not enough time, in one session, to discuss all possibilities, therefore, this presentation will focus on choosing the optimal detector for various applications and why.
It is important to consider the capabilities of all detectors before choosing the one that will provide the best results for the application and the requirements.
In this presentation, 12 detectors will be discussed including multi-dimensional GC detectors including mass spectrometer (MS), vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) and Infrared (IR).
The following relevant and necessary parameters for consideration when choosing an optimum detector that will be rigorously reviewed are, as follows:
• Universal or selective
• Dynamic range
• Detection limits
• Unknowns or knowns
• Need to ensure the identity of known compounds
• Cost
Principals of operation will also be discussed of several key detectors.
