Information
Mercury and other hazardous compounds have been found in cosmetics, posing potential health risks. Although banned in cosmetics by organizations such as the FDA, mercury persists in imported products and can cause poisoning. Mercury’s low cost and preservative properties are claimed to remove blemishes and lighten the skin. Because of these properties, mercury in its toxic form, methylmercury, can be added later to products that have already been manufactured. ISO has addressed this issue by introducing ISO 23674, which emphasizes the use of direct mercury analysis.
