Information

This presentation explores the analysis of elements in petroleum products using ICP-MS in compliance with ASTM Method D8110-17. The study extends beyond the seven primary elements specified in the method (Al, Ca, Cu, Fe, Pb, Mg, and K) to include twelve additional potential contaminants such as Si, P, S, As, and Hg. Addressing the known challenges in analyzing petroleum products, the presentation covers strategies for overcoming sample volatility, carbon buildup, and solvent contamination. Method accuracy and precision were evaluated using calibration standards, internal standards, and QC samples. The presented results demonstrate excellent method stability and repeatability, as evidenced by the consistent performance of internal standards and QC results over multiple analyses of naphtha samples spiked with trace elements. Attendees will gain insights into the effectiveness of the analytical techniques used and their application in ensuring the quality of petroleum products.
