Information
This presentation reveals the differences in chemical composition among three polystyrene samples, providing a step-by-step analytical protocol for detecting and identifying minor differences in similar materials and polymers. The technique employed is Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (Py-GC/MS), a straightforward solid sample introduction method that expands the capabilities of GC/MS. The Multi-Mode Micro-Furnace Pyrolyzer is directly interfaced with the GC injector, eliminating cold spots, carryover, and cross-contamination. The pyrolyzer offers various modes of operation, including Evolve Gas Analysis (EGA), Flash Pyrolysis, Thermal Desorption (TD), and Heart-Cutting, allowing for comprehensive analysis in a single system. With minimal sample preparation required, EGA provides initial information on thermal temperature behaviors, followed by Flash Pyrolysis, which yields pyrograms containing volatiles, additives, and polymer information. Utilizing TD-GC/MS reveals differences in additives compounds among the three samples. This protocol showcases Py-GC/MS as a powerful tool for analyzing similar materials and polymers, making it valuable for forensic science, failure analysis, and quality control applications.
